Do you ever feel as a classroom teacher, distance learning teacher or homeschool parent that you are wasting your breath when teaching your learners? To be honest, I believe sometimes you are. My reasons for believing this are because sometimes you are not teaching your learners in the way their brains learn best. I want to give you tips through this blog on how to teach to the brain. It isn’t hard at all! It is just a different way of thinking for some of us.
When learners receive information their brain must be allowed to process the information. The learners need to have an opportunity to make sense and meaning of the information. There are several ways to do this.
One way would be to let learners say the information back to you, another student or a sibling. It shouldn’t be memorized word for word. It should be in their own words. After reading or hearing nonfiction information, ask learners to tell you, in their own words, what the passage said or what they heard. This allows the learners to make sense of information. Then it is much easier for them to store the information in long term memory. The reason is because to be able to retell the information learners have to process the information in their brains.
This is such an easy strategy and reaps big results. Try it out by reading to your learners a few paragraphs of a nonfiction book. Then ask them to tell you what they heard you read or say. This works so well with science and history lessons. Remember to make it stress free and be encouraging and complimentary afterwards!!
